This bowl was used to hold charcoal for audience participants of 'Presence/Permanence'.
The clay bowl is roughly made with finger and thumb prints emphasised, intended to keep the indexical sign of its creation evident.
The charcoal has collected in the bits and valleys of the fingerprints, evidencing its previous use.

This bowl was used to hold water so audience participants of 'Presence/Permanence' could rinse their hands of charcoal. The ring of charcoal is a stain from the charcoal sitting on the surface of the water when in use.
Beeswax was used to make the clay waterproof, a technique used by prehistoric peoples.
